It's the sign of a good advertising campaign that whenever I hear mention of this island, I immediately think of the Get Wrecked on Great Keppel campaign that ran during the 1980s. Great Keppel Resort is currently getting "wrecked" itself and is closed for a long-overdue makeover, but that doesn't mean the island is off-limits. There are plenty of other places to stay; and fewer tourists means the island has a secluded atmosphere.

Great Keppel Island declared iconic

The Queensland Government has named parts of the picturesque Capricorn Coastal region as iconic.

The Iconic Queensland Places Act(2008) monitors large or controversial development in iconic places. Declaring sections of the central Capricorn Coast as iconic means they will have any future development monitored more closely.

EVERYONE knows that with all good parties, a hangover must surely follow.

For businesses left on Great Keppel Island, once famous as the party island off the central Queensland coast, this hangover is the sort that needs more than a greasy bacon-and-egg roll.
